Look for a natural connection

Think about organizations that serve a similar community or bring complementary experience. A local business and a nonprofit may share an interest in the same neighborhood, workforce, or community need. Name that connection before proposing a project.

Make the first conversation useful

Ask what the other organization is working toward and where they face challenges. Explain your own priorities just as clearly. Look for a small, specific way to help each other rather than trying to define a large partnership immediately.

Agree on a manageable first step

An introduction, a shared resource, or a small joint outreach effort can be a place to start. Clarify who is responsible, what each organization can contribute, and when you will check in. Choose something both teams can realistically support.

Follow through and learn

After the first step, compare what happened with what you hoped to accomplish. Share feedback, recognize each other’s contribution, and decide together whether another step makes sense. A useful relationship grows through consistent follow-through.
